USB 2 is about twice as fast as the microSD card slot on smaller models of Pi. The Pi 4 and 5 have a twice as fast slot, about the same speed as USB 2.
What is the speed of your microSD card? My fastest cards are four times faster than the ones supplied in a Pi kit and ten times faster than most of the economy cards sold online.
Is it A1, which is designed for small random writes including swap? It makes a big difference when combined with a fast card.
