Networking and servers • Re: Pi4 as a NAS and local media player?

I did something similar for my dad, except his relatively small stack of CDs didn't necessitate an extra drive - it all fitted on the Pi's SD card.

Hardware-wise I set him up with a HifiBerry DAC, although Raspberry Pi now sell their own DAC which is cheaper so I would recommend that one instead - specifically the DAC+ - see https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/dac-plus/.

Software-wise I needed something that was dead simple for a completely non-technical person to operate easily. I therefore went for Linn Kazoo on a tablet computer as the control point - see https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... inn.kazoo2. Behind the scenes the Pi runs two Java apps: the first is MinimServer which acts as a DNLA server for the music collection itself, and MediaPlayer which plays the music. MinimServer can be found at https://minimserver.com/, whilst MediaPlayer can be found at https://github.com/PeteManchester/MediaPlayer. If you're interested in using MediaPlayer then let me know, and I will give you some tips for setting it up - it's not the easiest to get going, but once you know the procedure you just need to follow it and it basically just works - it's not any more difficult than other options.

I looked at Moode as a possible replacement, but for some reason it fails in a rather non-obvious way if there is the slightest bit of corruption in any of the audio files in your library. I don't have time to go through my entire audio library to check every single file just to make Moode happy.

If you want music playback with display output on a TV, then have a look at Kodi, specifically the LibreELEC system, which boots straight into Kodi. If you have an existing remote control with suitable buttons (up, down, play, stop, etc) then it is possible to control Kodi via the CEC feature of HDMI, if your TV supports it. If not, you can add an infrared receiver to the Pi and use a separate remote control to control it.
