After looking into your issues, I've come to two conclusions:
1. Ubuntu Desktop 23.10 will not run on a Raspberry Pi 5 from a USB storage device. It must be run on an SD card.
2. There is a bug in the Raspberry Pi 5 and Bookworm wherein storage devices are not accessible immediately after a partprobe. This problem existed with the Raspberry Pi 4 and Bullseye when first released and later got fixed. I've added a delay (sleep) after partprobe to hopefully eliminate the problem.
Please test the attached mb-test script and let me know what you find.
