My question. Is there a cable (mini USB - at the DVD end) that will split into two at the USB A end? I.e one USB A for power and one for just data.
I could homebrew, but I've messed with USB cables before and they are really thin wires inside.

Almost certainly but:
  1. They're non-standard.
  2. It won't make any difference. No PI model does per port current limiting on the USB A ports. Published limits are the combined total available to al connected bus powered devices.
The general term for such a cable is a "Y" cable.

What are you using to power your Pi5? Without the official PSU or a similar PD PSU that has a 5A@5V mode total current for USB devices will be restricted to 600mA. With the official PSU (or equivalent) the limit is 1.6A.
