Just to get a bit into the reason for this: To my understanding the hardware PWM can do phase corrected PWM, but that would still create quite some inrush current when multiple channels are at the same duty cycle.
With 16 channels, each at 1 to 1.5 A that's close to 24 A, so I really wanted to divide this a bit over time. And of course, depending on the duty cycle there can still be overlaps, just less likely.
