Switching to Gen 3 just changes the timing, such that the data transfer rate increases. It is a silicon lottery for the Pi, SSD, adaptor board plus the quality of the cable as to how well it will perform. Some combinations work fine, some have minor issues (typically report small number of correctable errors), some have vast tracks of errors, and some will not run at all.No.BTW: Do you think that the connector on the RPI5 could have taken damage somehow, because I used Gen3?
You can "safely" switch to Gen 3 and seem how it runs, from an electronics point of view. Obviously any data you are moving to/from the NVMe SSD is at risk if you get uncorrectable errors. If you are not happy with the results just remove the Gen 3 setting and reboot.
