Having to drop the i2c baud rate pretty much confirms that their mcu can't keep up at 100 kHz, and is likely trying to clock stretch which isn't supported.
Whilst the vpu isn't busy it'll be running at a lower clock rate, but will bump up when busy or the uart is enabled. That potentially means it could fail on any version of Pi (except 5).
